Dating circa 1928, these rare “Papillon” sculptures by Gabriel Argy-Rousseau depict a woman with butterfly wings moments before flight, her head thrown back in exuberance. Crafted in magenta, amber and emerald green-blue, these glowing glass figures were designed by famed sculptor Marcel-Andre Bouraine and made using Argy-Rousseau’s complex pâté-de-cristal technique, which applies glass to a mold using just a few grains at a time. The figure is reminiscent of famed dancer, Loie Fuller, who took Europe by storm with her colorful “Papillon”, or “butterfly”, dance, which she performed with silk scarves suggestive of billowing wings.
