Posted @withrepost • @science101_magazine These may look like normal foxes, but they’re actually domesticated 🦊 “Domestic” isn’t just a term for any animal you bring in off the street; it’s characterized by actual genetic changes and selective breeding. In the 1950s, a Russian scientist started an incredible experiment: he bred friendly foxes for decades, essentially speeding up the domestication process that normally takes thousands of years. By the fourth generation of foxes, the cubs started behaving like puppies. By 2005, the foxes were playful and social. They acted very similarly to dogs in how they barked and were able to read human cues. But their behavior wasn’t the only thing that changed. They had floppier ears, curlier tails, and generally “cuter” features. Scientists learned a lot about the genetic changes and process of domestication from this experiment, but they’re still researching to identify the genes that led to these cutie pies.
