A manufacturing masterpiece. Rolex developed an exclusive technique to create the GMT-Master II’s red and blue Cerachrom insert. The brand usually employs zirconia to make ceramics, but this mineral cannot reach the desired red colour. Rolex therefore undertook significant research to develop an alternative using alumina, another mineral. The blue colour is achieved by impregnating half of the insert with a solution of chemical compounds, which will turn from red to blue during sintering at more than 1,600°C. This calls for great delicacy and precision to ensure a sharp, clear demarcation of colours on each half of the insert.
