Photo by Jasper Doest @jasperdoest | On a Sunday afternoon eleven-year-old Isabella arrives at the Bonaire Wild Bird Rehab holding one of six malnourished juvenile flamingos that she found while helping her father, who drives the @fkkanimalrescue ambulance. Since March, increasing numbers of juvenile flamingos have been found around the Pekelmeer, a shallow seawater lagoon on the island of Bonaire, which supports one of the most important nesting colonies of American flamingos in the Caribbean. For the last two years juvenile birds have been brought to the rehab, mostly underweight and dehydrated. The reason for this apparent sudden increase is currently being investigated; in the meantime, Elly Albers and a group of volunteers @bonairewildbirdrehab, including conservation hero Isabella, try to do whatever they can to rescue these birds and reintroduce them within their natural habitat.
