Did you know that the U.S. is the world’s most zealous incarcerator of women? That while only 4% of the world’s female population lives in the U.S., we account for over 30% of the world’s incarcerated women? Yet we rarely hear their stories; we don’t take into account the psychological impact prison has had on them, or the context of their experiences which often includes childhood trauma, sexual abuse, domestic violence, and poverty.
Moved by meeting incarcerated women in Oklahoma, many of whom were first-time, non-violent offenders, Ellen Stackable noted, “These women have been failed by everyone… When you learn what they’ve been through, you understand how they found their way to prison.” That’s when the English teacher of over 20 years, created PoeticJustice.org - a space where incarcerated women can heal and commune through their written word.

People are so quick to judge without putting effort into knowing a person first. I've been guilty several times myself of it and I try each day to stop that. I think it's sometimes habit as human error and a sad thing to bear witness to or be part of. But like you said, sometimes the most unlikely people amaze us in some way. Judge a book by a cover if you must, but at least try to read the pages while you're at it.

Danai you have no idea how happy this makes me to see this. My mother is incarcerated for a crime she did not commit. Even though it was a first offense, non-violent, she received 30 yrs in prison while the rapist himself got 20 yrs. In my opinion, they are locking up women to even out the %s of men and women incarcerated. Disgusting. Thanks Danai for this 💕

she was my teacher freshman year and i still talk to her all the time! next years shes kind of retiring from teaching to put full focus on poetic justice. gonna really miss her, but shes going to do bigger and better things to help people!
