‘The American Indian (Russell Means)’ is part of a series of works Andy Warhol executed as a project with West Coast dealer and Ace Gallery owner Doug Chrismas in the late 70s. An emblem of a sociopolitical crisis, the work depicts Russell Means - a member of the Lakota tribe - who led the American Indian Movement during the highly-publicized, seventy-one day siege of the town of Wounded Knee as protest of the U.S. government’s alleged tribal mistreatment. Executed in 1976, the work offers a rare synthesis of Andy Warhol’s devotion to popular culture and his adoption of political imagery in his oeuvre.
