Illegal armed groups have controlled Buenaventura, Colombia's second largest port, since 2007. Traveling to Buenaventura was once a very risky prospect. Since the peace process, signed in 2016 by the Colombian government, and with the presence of army troops to stabilize the city, the murder rate has fallen (though violent drug gangs still operate) and the city is making a move to attract tourists. Buenaventura is now a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, based on its gastronomy.
