A month later we met up at the Rose Bowl and we did our first run together. My favorite part of being a guide was hearing about all the things Newton has done. He was on Berkeley's Triathlon team, he is a grad student at Cal Tech and loves a good beer. Newton taught me that there are different types of vision impairments. He developed his as a teenager. I found it interesting that he can actually run on the track at night by himself— as long as there aren't too many people on there, of course! While Newton is probably the most self-sufficient person I know, being able to be a part of his goals for the marathon was both rewarding and nerve-racking. Knowing that someone else is relying on me to help them through their race put pressure on me to perform to my own potential as well as Newton's.
