This self-portrait of Sir Joshua Reynolds shows the artist with his hand cupped against his ear, identifying himself as a deaf man. Reynolds recalled that after he became deaf his sight sharpened. 'Colours, forms and contrasts all became more intense. It felt like I was living in a whole new world.' Sir Joshua Reynolds, Self-Portrait as a Deaf Man c.1775, on free display at Tate Britain. #DeafAwarenessWeek
