Halting at first, then loud enough to mute the last of the night’s insects. It’s a rustle of hooves parting blades of grass. An occasional snort of alarm through the mist–all clear. Branches crack in the distance, signaling a pachyderm’s breakfast. Soon, everything will come alive.
