Photo by Matthieu Paley @paleyphoto | This is one of several coal-fired power plants located on the edge of Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar. “Ulaanbaatar is already suffocating from its coal use,” says Sukhgerel Dugersuren, chair of a mining oversight group called Oyu Tolgoi Watch, but she fears “the way the planning is going, there’s going to be more [coal-fired] power plants. There’s going to be more coal burned here.” Ulaanbaatar’s air is one the world’s most polluted, especially during the cold winter months.
