Alloué à l'Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture en 1725, il accueillait les œuvres de ses membres. II fut couvert d'une verrière dès 1789. Pendant longtemps il fut un lieu d'exposition temporaire pour les artistes vivants. C'est là que s'ouvrit le musée public en 1793. - 🖼 L’état actuel du plafond, orné de stucs réalisés par Simart, est le résultat des travaux de Duban, réalisés entre 1849 et 1851. Le salon fut, à cette époque, consacré à la présentation des chefs-d’œuvre de la peinture.
