The only thing more inspiring than the professionalism and dedication of the fire crew is that they were all female. The first thing I did when I got home is share these photos with my daughters. Fourteen women from eight different agencies came together from all over Florida to highlight the leadership of women in fire, and the importance of fire in maintaining native landscapes. The team delivered a beautiful burn of a few hundred acres through restored longleaf pine and wire grass savanna—an ecosystem that thrives on frequent fire. In some areas, the well-controlled flames were a couple hundred yards from neighboring subdivisions. I am thankful for the people who care for the Florida Wildlife Corridor, all while helping protect this piece of the Everglades from over-development. Longleaf pine forests can support as much species diversity as tropical rainforests and are important stepping stones in the northward recovery of the endangered Florida panther. We need to conserve and restore more of these irreplaceable lands while there is still time.
