This shot was captured during the Aguda Carnival in Porto-Novo, Bénin by photojournalist Germano Miele (@germanomielephotography). The Agudas are Afro-Brazilian descendants returned to West Africa after the abolition of the slave trade. Some went back to their village of origin but many settled in coastal settlements such as Lagos, Ouidah and Porto-Novo that offered greater opportunities. The Agudas still maintain some aspects of Brazilian culture, such as Carnival celebrations and aspects of their language.
