By Melissa Farlow @melissafarlow | The best time to see Shoshone Falls is Spring when the snowpack melts and the Snake River roars through a deep basalt canyon. I’ve read about the Lake Bonneville flood in the last Ice Age and many times have tried to imagine the catastrophic event that caused western land formations. But I’ve always been in too much of a hurry and driven by the exit for Twin Falls on my way to somewhere else. This time we had the chance to stop and I was amazed. The power. The drama. For the first time I could visualize when the dam collapsed at Red Rock Pass more than 14,500 years ago and a lake covering large portions of Utah and some of Nevada and Idaho burst through—although it is still hard to imagine 1,000 cubic miles of water flowing at 70 miles per hour.
