Prince was a groundbreaking artist, and will be remembered for the ways he pushed boundaries in recording, songwriting, fashion, film, and performance. So it's no surprise that as soon as the technology was available to him, Prince was looking for inventive new ways that he could use the internet to connect directly with his fans.

When Prince found himself at odds with his label, Warner Bros. Records, in the mid-1990s, he saw the internet as an opportunity to cut out the intermediaries and distribute his music on his own terms. In 1998, Crystal Ball became the first album by a major artist to be sold via the web. And in the early 2000s, Prince was using his revolutionary NPG Music Club to stream new music to a network of subscribers, over a decade before Spotify and iTunes had made the practice commonplace.

When the @thewebbyawards presented Prince with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006, they stated that Prince had "forever altered the landscape of online musical distribution," and added that "Prince’s leadership online has transformed the entertainment industry and reshaped the relationship between artist and fan." And when he accepted the award, Prince gave a thought-provoking, five-word acceptance speech: "Everything you think is true." The Prince Estate is honored to carry forward Prince's legacy of groundbreaking work online with an evolving collection of websites that celebrate his legacy. Two of those websites, Prince's Annotated Discography and the fan-driven interactive site Prince2Me, have been nominated for Webby Awards this month, bringing the story of Prince's life online full circle.

If you haven't yet explored the immersive Annotated Discography site, which is an evolving exploration of Prince's massive catalog, or shared a personalized message via Prince2Me, we invite you to dive in at princeestate.com
