Photo by @babaktafreshi | In a typical moonless night deep in Chile's Atacama Desert, you're under an ocean of stars. Look all around the horizon: there's no prominent sign of city lights. Not many locations are left on this planet where you can still experience a dark sky like this. I have been to the greatest dark skies on every continent, from the heart of the Sahara to the Himalaya and to islands in the Pacific. But what makes Atacama unique is being dry and clear for so many nights a year. Photographed here is the southern sky above a cactus forest on high-altitude desert. Canopus, the second brightest star in the night sky, is near the center, next to the Magellanic Clouds (Milky Way’s satellite galaxies), easily visible to the naked eye.
