I arrived at this event completely untrained and ill-prepared for this level of skating. However, in hindsight, I was very lucky to have even qualified and made it out near the top from the regional and sectional competitions. That year, my sister and I were coachless for months because my parents couldn’t afford to pay the bills. I remember counting our blessings since we still had the chance to skate (even if it was a teach yourself kind of style). There were many times that I thought my mom and dad would come to our room at night to tell us the bad news that we had to quit. This is when a friend that knew about our situation informed us about a certain scholarship/aid that we could apply for to receive free room & board and ice time. I still remember scrambling around with my sister and father to figure out which VHS skating tape to submit for consideration. This was all happening only a few weeks or so before Nationals! When we heard that we received the skating scholarship from Ice Castles Foundation it was a HUGE game changer in our lives. It enabled me to keep skating AND also afforded me the opportunity to work with one of the most elite coaches, Frank Carroll (who taught skaters like Linda Fratianne and Christopher Bowman).
