I found a tumbling down shell shop on a small island off Bali. Of course I saw a little slice of intriguing beauty. I went in and got very curious about their shells and carvings. I exchanged numbers with the lovely lady on the left as I asked her who was the carver behind this “shell art” She told me it was her brother but he was away and to come back a week later to meet him and watch him in action. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A week later, I went back to a stormy monsoon island driving on my motorbike through what felt like rivers for roads to meet Ketut! Apparently the Master carver. He spoke perfect English. He said nice to meet you, “you bought my no good pieces!” He said, “I buy by machine because cheap cheap but want to meet you to see if you have good heart.” He kindly continued to say I did, (thank goodness) “I introduce you to my shy friend who’s the master!” Great I said, where? “ He not speak English and lives in north east Bali” , sigh- that’s 5 hrs away, but ok I said Terimakasi- Thank you thank you. 🙏 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Off I head a few days later with google maps translate. I get sent to a shop- no one is there , an hour later his wife turns up with his beautiful daughter, shows me around more goblin carved art but still no Master, Sigh. Another week goes by and finally I get a call from “Dharma” the Master. Boss, I’m sorry, no speak English, I come to your house. He arrives that evening after driving 40km and shows me his work. He’s the boss, he’s Dharma (meaning Truth) he’s the carver from a village of stone carvers. He teaches the youth of the village and is dedicated to his work. He is renowned as the finest carver around but the one that is the hardest to track down.
