From the December 23, 1946 MODERN LIVING feature: "LEATHER CLOTHES—Medieval-looking dresses are very smart, expensive, last a long time." According to LIFE, "Man's early clothing was fashioned, because of lack of anything else, from the skins of animals. This winter a 32-year-old New York designer named Zita Plaut has made a new luxury of an old necessity by putting fashionable women into the well-tanned hides of sheep, goats and antelopes." This image was featured in the photo essay and listed the outfit at $169 - with inflation, would cost over $2000 today.
