Austin, Texas is solidifying its role as a tech hub — even though it lost a bid to host Amazon's new headquarters.
Austin made the shortlist for HQ2, but lost out to New York’s Long Island City and Northern Virginia. Local opposition led Amazon to cancel its plans in New York, so the company said it would add new jobs in other cities — like Austin — instead.
Amazon has 6,600 workers in the Austin area, and it’s grocery business, Whole Foods Market, is already headquartered there. The 800 new Amazon employees will be focused on software and hardware engineering, cloud computing and research science.
