When the Fall 2019 catwalk shows drew to a close on March 5th, we knew these things to be true. The future of fashion depended on creative and artisanal integrity, a commitment to originality, and a wild idea of beauty—a banishment of mundanity, an end to disposability. This was a turning-point season, a referendum on banality and stuff for stuff’s sake, a moment to think hard about value and all the meanings therein. And nowhere more so than in Paris, where designers offered clothes of incalculable beauty, created by marrying old-world practices with future-minded aspirations. Modern girls, after all, want to invest wisely in extraordinary things.
