The minerals of Monte Altissimo were already known to Michelangelo, who explored here around 1518. These white marble excavation sites are located within the imposing and ecologically-rich Apuan Alps. For millions of years, organic sediments congealed to create this precious stone, forging the core of these severe mountains running along the Italian sea. Since Roman times, the white stone of Carrara has been reckoned as the finest marble. Ancient excavation techniques preserved these mountains for centuries, but the acceleration of new extraction technology has radically increased the destruction. Here in the last 30 years, more marble has been removed than during the past two millennia. My work revolves around how our actions shape our planet’s environment.
