Cuba’s syncretic religion, Santeria, has been gaining widespread popularity in the last decade after a long era of oppression. Formally known as the Regla de Ocha, this Afro-Caribbean religion has roots in Yoruba traditions, while incorporating some Roman-Catholic rituals. During their year-long initiation, women and men are called iyawo, which translates as “bride of Orisha,” a Santeria deity and a powerful but mortal spirit. The iyawos are obliged to dress head to toe in white. A symbol of purity and peace, the white dress will also symbolize rebirth.
