This is Daoud Nabi, 71 (pictured with his granddaughter). He and his family emigrated from Afghanistan to New Zealand in the 1980s in the wake of the Soviet Union invasion. He ran the local Afghan association and helped new refugees settle, meeting them at the airport and helping them get started in their new lives. His last words were "Welcome brother" as he greeted the terrorist at the door of the mosque. He died trying to save others.

49 people lost their lives yesterday in #Christchurch, including a 3 year old boy. But people are not merely statistics, they are individual human beings. Even as forces try to dehumanise groups of people, we must resist and try to humanise each one. And as scary as it may be we must acknowledge the seriousness and scale of the threat posed by right wing extremism which is on the rise all over the world.
