This rare early painting by #ElizabethCatlett dates to the artist’s time living in New York and working in Harlem at the George Washington Carver School, where she managed fundraising and publicity while also teaching sculpture and sewing. She derived many subjects from her experiences at the community school, which was attended by domestic workers, cooks, janitors, elevator operators, and workers in the garment industry. The woman boldly rendered here casts a penetrating gaze to her side, while the strong ovoid form of her head powerfully fills the painting’s modest dimensions. #WomensHistoryMonth #TheMet
