African animals are fairly habituated to the presence of safari vehicles bouncing around the savanna and predators sometimes use them for cover while hunting their prey. During game drives, it’s a common held belief that the wildlife sees the vehicles as one animal or thing and can’t recognize the people inside. However, there are times I am not so sure that’s the case. Take this lioness for example. Her and a few other members of the pride had finished a meal and went into the bushes to relax and escape the heat. While lounging around, she locked eyes with me and my lens and wouldn’t break her gaze. It was hard to imagine she couldn’t see me as I squirmed around the floor of my vehicle trying to get eye level with her. No matter how many times I go on safari, I can’t ever shake the feeling of my blood pressure going up when a lion stares right at you as you sit in a totally exposed vehicle. The thrills of Africa!
