Theaster Gate's slate wall drawings, currently on view at Palais de Tokyo in Paris, form an improvised timeline that brings together divergent colonial histories: juxtaposing the local history of Malaga Island in Maine with broader networks across Europe, Africa, and the United States. Punctuated by key moments from the history of anti-miscegenation laws in the U.S., Gate's diagrams allow multiple narratives to resonate across time and space.
