8 years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. Today is a day for remembering.
There is still much work to do. But so much progress has been made in Fukushima Prefecture since that fateful day.
One of the symbols of reconstruction efforts in Fukushima is Yonomori Park’s sakura tunnel. Once one of the Prefecture’s most famous cherry blossom spots, since the disaster a portion of it as been blocked off from public entry due to decontamination work. But for the last few years, as residents returned to areas of the town, Tomioka Town has started holding their cherry blossom light-up events, continuing the town’s legacy, and signifying a start to the slow return to what once was.
