Without ever laying eyes on a San Joaquin kit fox, scientists at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s Center for Conservation Genomics know how many of the cute creatures live in California’s Ciervo-Panoche Natural Area. I Lived all my life in the San Joaquin Valley and only once did I see one in the predawn hours out in the countryside. I was surprised by how little they were especially when compared to our coyotes.
