In 1989 #MarioMerz created a massive new sculpture called "Unreal City" for his retrospective in the museum's rotunda. Merz used the hemispherical form of the igloo—a transitory dwelling—frequently in his work to express his faith in the liberating powers of restlessness with the world and its values. "Unreal City" embodies both beauty and violence: the shards of broken glass clamped onto this fragmented edifice are at once delicate and dangerous. The work's title relates to the intensely subjective, surreal quality of Merz’s art, which, as it shifts nomadically between locations, styles, or mediums, conjures theaters of meaning in the mind.
