Photo by @CarltonWard | A leopard stalks through the rainforest in the central African country of Gabon. This photo was captured by a camera trap consisting of a 35mm SLR film camera in a waterproof box connected to three flashes in waterproof tubes. The big cat triggered an invisible infrared trip wire set across the trail, essentially taking its own picture as I was camped several miles away. This was one of the first successful camera trap photos of my career, from 2002, when I was part of a series of biodiversity expeditions with the Smithsonian Institution. The photo was recorded on 100 ISO slide film, and nearly three months passed before I got it processed back in the U.S. When the image came into focus on my light table, I literally bounced on my bed in excitement that the homemade camera trap had worked and made possible a photo I could have never created while holding the camera in my hands. I had no idea that 15 years later I would be leading the #PathofthePanther project with @InsideNagGeo using digital camera traps to capture otherwise impossible photos of endangered panthers in the swamps and forests of my native Florida. Thankfully, digital cameras are not limited to 36 exposures or delays in processing. But looking at the images in a camera that has been on a trail for a month is still like opening a present. #leopard #Gabon #cameratrap
