Photo by @amivitale | One of the very last northern white rhinos in the world is prepared to be airlifted with three others from the snowy @safari_park_dvur_kralove, in the Czech Republic, in December 2009 to @olpejeta conservancy, on the broad savannah of northern Kenya. The hope was that the air, water, and food—not to mention room to roam—of native lands might stimulate them to breed and the offspring could repopulate Africa. Alas, no offspring resulted, and Sudan, the last male northern white rhino on the planet, passed away of natural causes in March 2018.
While his passing was devastating, I believe it is also a wake-up call. In a world of seven billion, we need to start recognizing that we are not separate from nature. When we see ourselves as part of nature, then saving nature is really about saving ourselves.
