To honor the black community on Instagram and celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re sharing another story in our series #ShareBlackStories. This month and beyond, follow along and share your unique perspective using the hashtag. For professional dancer Daniel Harder (@theonlydanielharder), black stories can be shared through movement. “The beautiful thing about dance is that it is a way to express anything without words,” he says. “It speaks to the human spirit.” Daniel is currently touring the country with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, whose founder was the first to stage routines set to blues, spirituals and gospel music. “Alvin Ailey created a company at the brink of the civil rights movement,” Daniel says. “It was a predominantly black dance company sharing our stories on stages across the world, but also opening up people’s minds to the idea that our stories are everyone’s stories. They’re universal stories.” A self-described “music video kid,” Daniel first told his mom he wanted to be a professional dancer after a Janet Jackson concert. In high school, dance star Debbie Allen invited him to her summer program. In 2010, he was picked to join the Alvin Ailey main company by one of its original dancers and then-artistic director Judith Jamison. “I’m always very humbled because I had a lot of really influential people take me under their wing and helped cultivate my love for this craft,” Daniel says.
