Thermal time-lapse image by @simonnorfolkstudio and @klausthymann | The world's glaciers have always fluctuated, but the dramatic melt in recent decades is a strong indicator of human-induced climate change. On the Furka Pass in southern Switzerland, a small shop has maintained an ice grotto, for over a 100 years, carved into the nearby Rhône Glacier, and charges tourists to experience the blue ice. It has therefore been worth their investment attempting to slow the glacier’s retreat. They have spent heavily on a special thermal blanket that has successfully kept about 25 meters (in depth) of ice from disappearing, keeping the ice grotto intact. Klaus Thymann and I visited the glacier to photograph the unusual landscape and learn more about why the blankets were put there and if they are working. Follow me @simonnorfolkstudiofor more on this and future projects. Music: @lexrecords and inspired by Andrée's Arctic balloon expedition of 1897.
