Fishermen were stunned when they reeled in two rarely seen deep-sea fish on the Japanese island of Okinawa last month. Known as oarfish, the creatures measured about 12 and 13 feet long, and both died shortly after they were caught. Traditionally known as the “Messenger from the Sea God’s Palace” in Japan, legend has it that the slithery creatures beach themselves ahead of underwater earthquakes. Though scientists dispute such claims, the myth gained traction after at least a dozen oarfish washed up in Japan in the year prior to the 2011 Fukushima earthquake.
