This statue of the Buddha was made in the 2nd–3rd century in Gandhara – a historical region covering modern-day north-western Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan. The carving on this sculpture is incredibly detailed, as can be seen in the Buddha’s delicate fingernails and the folds in his robes.
The golden statue in the background is of Tara, the Buddhist goddess of compassion, and was made in the 8th century in Sri Lanka. It was cast in solid bronze and then gilded – covered in a thin layer of gold ✨

Nobody can imagine the british museum without all these exhibits and of course the top ancient greek marbles that denies to give back..it should find its own history..it sad..give them all back..the acropolis museum is waiting..

I was lucky enough to study the art of Gandhara with the professor Maurizio Taddei, now as twenty years ago, this piece excites me!
