A small island in the Seto Inland Sea, Naoshima is also known as one of Japan's "art islands." The island is a hub for contemporary art, featuring multiple museums and galleries designed by noted Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Visitors can rent bikes and pedal around Naoshima, taking in the scenery and artwork that Naoshima has to offer. Some of the highlights include Yayoi Kusama's "Pumpkin" (1994), arguably Naoshima's most iconic work of art; the exterior of Naoshima Bath "I♥︎湯," a functioning "sento" (public bath); and Sou Fujimoto's "Naoshima Pavilion." In 2019, the three-part Setouchi Triennale will take place over 12 islands, making it the ideal time to schedule a long-weekend vacation. (Claire Williamson @accidentaltokyoite photos)
