I’ll never forget meeting Sidney Poitier, Belafonte, & Brando one day in 1951 when I happened to be walking south on Broadway towards Birdland. There was something about Sidney that we could all feel…He had such a kind spirit & I knew it wouldn't be the last time we saw each other. A few years later, he graciously put in a good word about my film scoring & I was hired for "The Slender Thread," & two years later, for "In the Heat of the Night." Fast forward to 1974, right after my first aneurysm...It didn't look like I'd make it, so my friends planned a memorial service for me at The Shrine...This picture was taken that night & I cherish it to this day. He has been there for me in the best of times & also in the darkest...That's TRUE friendship, & I wouldn't trade it for anything in the ?!! Happy Birthday to you my dear brother, Sidney!
