#FriezeArtFair: Helen Frankenthaler's "Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein at the Fireplace" is currently on view in our booth at Frieze Los Angeles.

The work was painted during the artist’s brief and deliberate return to the gestural improvisation of Abstract Expressionism from 1959–60. Immediately preceding Frankenthaler's first foray into printmaking, the work is a graphic painting that employs an economy of line not commonly seen in her earlier works. The painting’s simplicity is heightened by areas of canvas left bare.
