Photo by @Joel Sartore with @joeriis | At dusk, a hippo stares down a remote camera, placed at a favorite watering hole in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda. Did you know hippos can’t swim very well or float? Instead, they walk or stand on surfaces below the water, like sandbanks. Despite their inability to swim, this species will still spend most of its time in the water to protect their sensitive skin from the sun. Hippos can even close their nostrils and ears to prevent water from entering, allowing them to submerge their bodies below the surface of the water.
