Photo by @davidburnettfoto // I travelled to Jamaica in 1976, with a TIME Magazine reporter, to do a story on the early arrival of reggae music into the US. Very few Americans had heard of reggae, me amongst them, but diving right in, we met a number of groups and singers, all of whom would end the conversation with “when ya gonna see Bob?” Even by 1976 Bob Marley had become the uncrowned prince of reggae and on our last working day, we spent several hours with him at his Tuff Gong home in Kingston. Unlike what might happen today, we had no publicist, no one to get in the way of our visit. I was struck, as the interview went on, by the breadth of his awareness, sensitivity and knowledge. He seemed to me to already full of wisdom. Thirty one is a young age to be wise. The following year I joined up with the band again in France on the Exodus tour for five days. I’m only sorry I wasn’t wise enough myself, to stay on for the whole tour. #bobmarley #music #archives
