A Texas school district has spent more than $6 million on everything from facial recognition software to AR-15 rifles to keep students safe from potential school shooters.⠀
⠀
The district in Texas City, Texas, has invested in IDs to track the whereabouts of students and staff, cellphone panic buttons for teachers to signal police, remote-activated locks on classroom doors, and facial recognition software to scan for people not allowed on school grounds. A newly expanded security team keeps 22 AR-15s in their offices.⠀
⠀
"My philosophy is you fight fire with fire," said Mike Matranga, a former U.S. Secret Service agent who was hired as head of security for the school district and is leading the changes.⠀
⠀
The efforts followed a school shooting last year in Santa Fe, Texas—located 15 miles from Texas City—where a gunman killed 10 people and wounded 13. ⠀
