In the exquisite landscape of coastal Alaska, fishing is not just a job: It is a social tie, a way of life that carries women through the flux of extreme seasons. “There’s an incredible community of women in Alaska, and it’s not uncommon for sisters to fish together,” Claire Neaton, co-founder of Alaskan nautical wear company Salmon Sisters, explains. Women rarely see one another from June until September, as each boat fishes its own region of the sea. But potlucks follow in the autumn, as the community draws close once again.
