Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Red fox kits – It might only be January but I am already thinking about and planning for some foxy adventures this coming spring. Though I will be bitting and bobbing (Derbyshire phrase!) all over the country during spring and summer I definitely want to be able to have something to work on properly when I am home. Unfortunately having lost for good a beautiful fox/badger site last year I’m planning on revisiting an old site owned by some very good friends of ours and I will soon be erecting a number of hides on site ready for spring. This way, if the foxes do den where I predict then my hides will already have become so much part of the landscape that the foxes and the cubs will barely give them a second glance. As well as having two hides either side of the predicted den site, to factor in for changeable wind directions, I’ll also be working from some low level hides as I can remember being frustrated with my last set up that I was unable to do this comfortably. As always my photography will involve a lot of compromise and I’ll be forced to commit to one or other type of photography depending on what behaviour I can anticipate and where it may occur. This image, of a young cub mouthing its older sibling, was captured at this soon-to-be-revisited site several years ago but if all goes well then I will hopefully be looking to improve significantly on what I’ve already been able to produce. If this site doesn’t work out then I’ve also got another site on another friends land that also sounds very promising. Either way, whilst foxes used to be an incredibly difficult species with which to work I reckon this year that the combination of my knowledge and experience combined with some friendly landowners means that I’m hoping for a very good year.
