Photo by @andy_mann | During a recent circumnavigation of Svalbard, I awoke around 2 a.m. and stepped outside to check on a mother polar bear and two cubs sleeping a few miles away when we had anchored the boat on sea ice for the night. This is the image that will forever be etched into my memory (along with a tinge of seal breath) as I opened the portside hatch and stepped onto the outer deck of the boat. She reached for me, but I had the luxury of a few inches at my back. Curious but cautious, she hopped down and took her cubs away. I couldn't fall back asleep, needless to say. It's such a privilege and an honor to experience wildlife from this distance and one for which I'm forever grateful.
