25 years ago today, CLERKS made its @sundancefestival debut! The last quarter century of my life was predicated on that screening. The buzz began that night, following out 10pm screening, after which I did not do a Q&A (the first time they put a mic in my hand was after the second screening days later). But the screening that took place 25 years ago tonight also marked the first time I got to see Clerks with an audience that didn’t work on the flick. I can still hear that life-defining laughter, as the crowd guffawed along with the movie and not at it. I remember distinctly that sensation of having my suspicions confirmed: the movie *was* funny, and not just to me and my friends. Clerks just worked. I remember talking to @samosier for hours that night, elated that the audience seemed to “get” the little dirty Jersey movie. It wasn’t just a great screening, it was also validation of my world, my friends, and all the goofy stuff we ever talked about. That screening let me know it was okay to be me.
