Getting photographs of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins off southern Mozambique’s Ponta Do Ouro marine reserve was a wee bit tricky. To make this image I had to swim into the surf zone and repeatedly free dive under breaking waves. Exact timing and a healthy dose of good fortune meant the difference between getting the shot or getting pounded by the surf. This was originally a color photograph and only recently did I come to appreciate its qualities as a black and white image.
