Walls have been built for millennia to keep invaders out or to keep people in. From the Great Wall of China to Hadrian's Wall, the Maginot Line, the Berlin Wall and the "Iron Curtain", history teaches us that walls do not work.
As Professor Michael Dear wrote in 2016, "Walls can exacerbate the problems they were intended to solve. Put simply, walls do not work as permanent solutions to tough problems.
