Photo by @hammond_robin | “We live as husband and wife, like any other couple. We are happy. It has been 11 years.” Sunita Thing (center), is a transgender woman. She stands with her husband, Shankar, and their two sons, Sudip and Dipesh. Deep down it
felt wrong, but at 17, when her father arranged her marriage to a woman, she obeyed. The discomfort grew—so much so that she attempted to take her own life. She went on to have two sons with her wife but continued to be desperately unhappy. That was until she met other transgender women. “After meeting several people like me—my happiness knew no limit.” She discontinued her marriage, fell in love with a man, and transitioned to become a woman and a mother. “My sons have accepted me as their mother and Shankar as their father,” she says. | The #WhereLoveIsIllegal campaign is a platform for LGBT stories of survival.
